She says she strives for academic excellence amid challenges. Achieving educational goals has not always been easy for her. Having experienced significant financial challenges growing up, it would have been easy for her to give up. In reflecting on her journey, Kamala recalls, “My mother left me with my grandmother when I was three weeks old. I did not come to know my father until I was 19 years old. To finance my high-school education, my grandmother relied on small loans from the bank to keepus afloat until she couldno longer begiven access to these loans due to her age. I remember not having lunch money to go to school because her loanpaymentswere due,”she said. Brown is in her final year at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, pursuing a BSc in international relations with a minor in criminology. She is passionate about addressing violence against children and inequalities against persons with a disability. As such, she volunteers as a peer career adviser for the Office of Student Services at The University of theWest Indies (UWI); has been a Respect Jamaica youth adviser is active with the citizen’s association within her community; and supports the elderly at her church. Despite the challenges, Brown emphasises that the scripture from Joshua 1:9 has helped to keep her focused, “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with youwherever you go”. In continuing to reflect on her journey, Brown shares: “Outside of my grandmother andmy grandaunt, I barely had any other family member to depend on, because I was seen as the ‘bad apple’. I remember times leading up to CSEC and CAPE where I had to stay behind until late in the evenings to complete my School-Based Assessments (SBAs), as sometimes there was no light at home.” These challenges did not prevent Brown from achieving success, as she left high school with a total of 18 subjects. With the help of her grand-aunt, she started university. She also met her father while at university, and he began to provide financial support. This glimmer of hope was short lived as, unfortunately, not too long after meeting him, her father was shot and killed in October 2020. At the end of Brown’s second year of university, her grand-aunt retired, and she was now at another crossroads. It is here that the VM Foundation Master Plan Scholarship provided that final push that she needed. “At this time, I had no one else to rely on,” she said. “I am honoured to have been awarded the VM Foundation Master Plan Scholarship. I am also proud to be on the Dean’s Honour Roll. It’s really a blessing to see all my hard work being acknowledged.” Brown is now well on her way to pursuing a career in human rights and foreign policy. She has some encouragement for those experiencing roadblocks on their journey to achieving their goals, “Our challenges should not deter us from achieving what we want. Even if you are your only cheerleader, keep cheering yourself on along the journey until others join you. It is not how you start; it is how you finish. It might be hard, but keep pressing! It will all make sense one day.” The VM Foundation Scholars programme offers scholarships to students at the secondary and tertiary levels. The VM Foundation Junior Plan Scholarship and PEP Bursary are for students who have completed PEP in the year of application and will be starting high school. The VM Foundation Future Plan Scholarship is for students who will be starting tertiary education in the year of application at a local tertiary institution in any field. My first year was the most difficult, as I had to adjust to the new requirements of undergraduate studies. However, the friends that I made, and lecturers’ assistance helped me to overcome the struggles. Additionally, the wide range of clubs not only in engineering but UWI, in general, provided a setting for many networking opportunities. Another obstacle that I faced was the COVID-19 pandemic in my second year. The switch to online learning at home was a drastic one that further forced me to enhance my ability to work in various situations. Even though the conditions still exist, clubs and societies were able to host events to keep students engaged, making the experience feel wholesome. The Faculty of Engineering equipped me with the skills required to enter the labour market, and it would not have been possible without the financial aid that I received from Jamaica Energy Partners. The most astonishing part of my experience was my transition from being a nonchalant high-school graduate to an all-rounded, compassionate being. Patient interactions and rotating through the different hospitals have helpedme to blossom my appreciation for life. I entered medical school in 2016 with no idea about how I would be able to pay the tuition fee annually. I am now about to graduate, which is a testament of perseverance, patience, and determination. Nonetheless, I was still able to maintain my mental well-being with the support of my family. Additionally, I have learned that asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness. Organisation is essential to decrease the risk of being flustered by the amount of information, and there is no clear-cut approach to medical school. Education, which has always been a primary focus of the Sagicor Foundation, is seen as a critical ingredient in shaping the minds of the country’s future professionals. As such, to date, millions have been invested in the dreams of students who go in pursuit of higher education, which has positively changed the lives of many scholars. At a value of up to $300,000 annually, the tertiary scholarships are open to Jamaican students pursuing a first degree at the following schools and are renewable up to four years: The University of the West Indies; The University of Technology, Jamaica; The Mico University College; the Northern Caribbean University; the Caribbean Maritime University; the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean; and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The criteria for selection are based on academic performance, community involvement , volunteer ism, strong leadership potential, and a demonstration of financial need. A grade point average of 3.0 and 40 hours of voluntary service with the Sagicor Foundation are mandatory for scholarship renewals. Applicants or their parents or legal guardian must be a Sagicor Client to apply. Children of Sagicor clients and team members at the secondary level can also access scholarships valued at $50,000 annually, renewable up to five years. The scholarship is open to students who performwell in the national Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination in the current year of the scholarship. The scholarship is renewable once students maintain an average of 80 per cent or higher. The foundation’s scholarship application period runs until May 31. Patricia Sutherland, chairman of the foundation and daughter of the late co-founder, Joan Duncan, noted, “We are proud to honour my mother’s memory by continuing to contribute to Jamaica through the transformation of lives and helping young people to realise their dreams. When my mother started this company in 1992, her aim was not to make a lot of money for herself, but to give ordinary Jamaicans an opportunity to access the money market, so that they could achieve their dreams. The bursary is open to any exceptional student in need from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, and who is starting their final year of studies (any faculty). Through the years, more than 14 recipients have been awarded the bursary. Burger King’s 21 years annual scholarship awards programme has awarded more than 300 Jamaican youth with over $50million in scholarships, bursaries and book grants through the years. In 2022, the Lois Sherwood Arts Bursary is being upgraded to a full scholarship, valued at $300,000 for the recipient’s final year of study. The upgrade further anchors Burger King’s commitment to investing in the arts. Sabrena McDonald Radcliffe, Burger King’s head of sales, marketing and corporate communications, said: “The Lois Sherwood Arts Scholarship is an important feature of our annual scholarship programme, because Burger King believes in empowerment through sports education, arts and culture.
