The Shipping Association of Jamaica was registered in 1939 as a trade union. It was formed with the following goals:
1. To improve conditions of employment.
2. To establish uniformity in the rates paid to labour on wharves and ships.
3. To ensure the payment of fair and reasonable rates.
4. To ensure that labourers give a fair day's work for a fair day's pay.
Today, the association continues to evolve but maintains the core function of managing labour the Port of Kingston.
