As the Ministry of Education gets ready to roll out the planned infusion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in schools, there seems to be some resistance by Jamaica College to be a part of the programme.
"The Ministry of Education wishes to clarify that the proposal to introduce a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy programme at Jamaica College is in the discussion phase," the Ministry of Education moved to clarify in a recent release.
According to the release, no decision has yet been taken in this regard by the institution's board or the Ministry of Education.
Principal Ruel Reid, in an emailed response to The Gleaner, said: "The board has yet to approve. We don't wish to be called a STEM Academy."
He indicated that the board would address the issue at its next meeting.
