The Broadcasting Com-mission of Jamaica (BCJ) has noted the announcement of a plan for the merger of the media assets of Radio Jamaica Limited and the Gleaner Company Limited. Both entities or their subsidiaries operate electronic media outlets.
While the commission is not empowered to address the print media aspects of the deal, the electronic media implications will arise for regulatory review, as the contracting parties indicated. This is in keeping with the legal requirement that mergers of electronic media entities be reported to the commission, and its approval sought before arrangements are finalised.
