Tragedy gripped the usually quiet town of Christiana, Manchester, when, on July 20, the realities of crime-infested Jamaica showed up in its midst. A lone gunman held up and murdered businessman Terence Green in cold blood.
The death robbed the parish of one of its most illustrious sons. Still in his 40s, Green had positively touched thousands of lives in the roles of justice of the peace, Rotarian, a beloved son, friend, husband and father.
Everyone remembers Green as a quiet and gentle soul, who touched the lives of many. Among those expressing sadness at his passing were The Reverend Gary Harriott of Brice United Church, who told The Gleaner he found Green to be a pleasant person who made time to rap with everyone.
On a more philosophical note, Harriott said the poverty of leadership in the lives of young boys is robbing the country of positive leadership examples set by families like the Greens.
"Terry was a son, friend, co-worker, travelling companion, inspiration and a challenge," said his father, Ivan Green.
"He was a fast learner and well informed, sourcing all his information from the Internet . He never refused to grant a favour asked, and served the public well as a JP and lay magistrate," Green added.
Ron Hamilton, Rotarian and retired principal of Holmwood Technical High School, remembered a quiet student who did his school work, was well behaved and an example for his peers.
"Terence also became a Rotarian and performed his tasks commendably at that level as well," he said.
Meanwhile, retired teacher Beresford South, who taught Green at Holmwood Technical High School for four years, remembered "an extremely ambitious, friendly and well liked student".
"Terence loved to engage you in thought-provoking discussions on a range of subjects and he always found time from his busy schedule to do so," South told The Gleaner, his face a picture of grief. The former teacher said he was pleased to see how Green had matured and excelled over the years.
Cab drivers who ply the busy route in front of the Christiana Pharmacy, where Green was co-owner, as well as citizen of the town, have also expressed sadness at the businessman's death.
Green is survived by his widow Caroline, son Matthew, step-daughter, Danielle, as well as parents Ivan and Veda Green, brothers Christopher and Kirk. His funeral will be held on Sunday, August 16, at the Kendal Conference Centre, Manchester, starting at noon.
