Director of Elections, Orrette Fisher, says there has been a significant increase in the number of persons seeking to get on to the new voter’s list.
Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting an application.
Fisher says preliminary figures have shown a major jump in applications, but he could not provide specifics.
He says the increase is spread across urban and rural parishes.
The director of elections notes that the Electoral Office of Jamaica has had to put in place additional staff and other measures to handle the rush at some of its offices.
Fisher says all applications will be properly vetted so that only eligible persons are added to the voter’s list.

Fisher says the EOJ is on target to becoming fully prepared for a national election.
A general election is constitutionally due in 2016 but there have been several signals from the government that an election may be called this year.
