BOG WALK, St Catherine:
The grounds of the Power of Faith Ministries in Bog Walk, St Catherine was the scene of a number of activities recently, as scores of persons converged on the venue to be first in line to access free medical and dental care, as well as blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks.
It was the first time that True United Sisters (TUS) and the church were joining forces to stage a health and information fair and concert.
"This event is our gift to the residents of Bog Walk and surrounding areas, particularly women, given the fact that International Women's Day was celebrated earlier this month, We have a number of agencies participating, including the National Health Fund, they sponsored the blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, the St Catherine Health Department provided us with a doctor and a 12-member dental team from the University of Technology (UTech) Outreach Programme offering free dental care," Karen Sudu, founder, TUS explained to Rural Xpress.
Sudu established TUS in 2005, however it was in 1980, while a student at St Jago High School that she envisioned such an organisation. The organisation's mandate is to provide assistance for unemployed and unskilled single mothers and their children through educational, skills training and income-generating programmes.
For the Reverend Howard Grandison, pastor, Power of Faith Ministries, Bog Walk branch, the health and information fair was a mission accomplished.
"We are very pleased to partner with Miss Sudu and her organisation to stage this event because it's something that we've always wanted to do. We are celebrating our 16th anniversary and this event is quite fitting to reach out to members of the Bog Walk community," he told Rural Xpress
