WESTERN BUREAU:
Munro College warmed up for Saturday's ISSA-FLOW daCosta Cup derby football match against rivals and defending champions, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Maggotty High at Appleton Sports Complex yesterday.
The match, which had its kick-off last Thursday, was abandoned because of rain and persistent lightning strikes with 30 minutes played and Maggotty holding a 1-0 lead after Sandrae Facey scored in the 30th minute.
Yesterday's match was a shortened version for some supporters who turned up to watch the continuation.
When play resumed, it appeared that Maggotty were ready to log their first win of the season. They were dominant in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half, with Facey in particular proving a danger once more to the Munro defence.
But Munro persisted and could have easily won the game had they been a lot more clinical in the final third.
In fact, were it not for a defender's mistake - in chopping down Munro skipper Timar Lewis inside the box, as the forward bore down on goal - they could have been celebrating only their first three points of the season.
Lewis got up to side-foot a penalty to the left of Delano Lewis in goal for Maggotty in the 78th minute, robbing the hosts of the chance of victory.
"I think poor decision making around the back and in attack made us look real ordinary at times today," said Lance Morgan, Munro's coach.
"All we needed was just to be more composed in attack, but overall I think we managed well, although we should have won the game."
He said the game was a hard one and that it sets them up well for the derby preparations against STETHS.
"We will take this and go into preparations for Saturday's big game. We need to win that one, so we are going put in some work for it," Morgan told The Gleaner.
Munro moved to six points from four matches, while Maggotty remain without a victory, but now have two points from their four matches.
