Herbert Morrison Technical High School will be installing a 3-000-watt grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) system having received a $500,000 grant from the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ ) after students from the institution placed second in the Science Category of the 2015-16 Schools Energy Programme Competition.
A four-member team from the Montego Bay-based high school entered a model design depicting how renewable energy could be used to provide electricity for a building on their school campus, which won second prize in the 16-19 age category of the competition. In addition to $40,000 each, the students won funding to implement an energy-saving project to help reduce their school's electricity costs.
