The name of Sunday's event at Little Ochie, Alligator Pond, St Elizabeth, indicates that it is for lovers of the beat from the Eastern Caribbean, which is now in full flower of its annual season. However, although the event is named Soca on the Beach, the line-up indicates that it is for persons who appreciate reggae and dancehall as well.

The organiser, Marvin 'Horseman' Wallace, told The Gleaner that Sunday's performers are soca princess Patrice Roberts, Beenie Man, Yellowman, George Nooks, Admiral Bailey and Mr Khool. Bass Odyssey will play recorded music.

In anticipating the composition of what he expects to be a bumper crowd, Horseman said: "we look for big people, Christian people, soca people and dancehall people."

So while, obviously, Roberts' appeal is for the soca fans, George Nooks' gospel songs should go over well on the most popular day of Christian worship. "We go right across the board," Horseman said.

The gates open at 10 a.m. and performances are scheduled for noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. There will be a break after the first two, then after the final performances, Bass Odyssey goes fully into the after party. From experience, Horseman said that can go well into the pre-daylight hours. "Patrice Roberts has a large fan base in Jamaica," he said.
