Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has proven herself as a phenomenon on the track, but has also become a very astute businesswoman.
She has added another feather in her business cap, with the launch of her hair-care line - Lady Shelly.
She told Outlook, "Lady Shelly is really a transition and evolution process for Chic Hair Ja, which was necessary to grow and elevate the business. Having been in the business of wearing hair extensions, I wanted to offer women the opportunity of a dual-care system using natural products."
The Lady Shelly hair-care line consists of six products. The Stunning Start is the nourishing sulphate-free shampoo that hydrates, nourishes and replenish dry hair strands and roots, leaving the hair refreshed, soft and manageable.
Gold Rush is their conditioner that ensures that the hair stays healthy and strong. It is lightweight and absorbed rapidly into the hair while softening and detangling the hair.
Herbal Sensation is a leave-in conditioner that extends the conditioning experience for softer, longer, stronger hair. The Pure Glow is a hydrating mist that protects the hair with the moisture it needs, no matter how the hair is worn. Fraser-Pryce explained, "The hair can be in a bun, pin, straight etc, ... Pure Glow mist is a lightweight formula which penetrates deep into the hair to deliver powerful herbal extracts, oils and more that hydrates every strand."
The Supreme Root Radiance Scalp Balm has a combination of antioxidant, rich plant extracts and preserving substances to nourish the scalp and hair follicles. The Silk Shield is their outshine serum. "When I was designing the bottle, I considered individuals who may be in a protective hairstyles or braids - so it is made up of a syringe-type dropper, which makes it easy to apply to the hair strands or scalp, no matter the style that is being worn." Enriched with healthy herbs and nutrients, and rich oils such as argon oil and vitamin E oil, it is a daily hair sealant that strengthens, nourishes and moisturises the hair while boosting shine.
The best part? Like Fraser-Pryce, it's 100 per cent made in Jamaica.
"When I thought about having my own hair-care line, I really wanted a product that could be used by every woman. The product line was specially made to be beneficial to all women of any hair texture. It is a multicultural hair-care line; no matter if you are black, white, Hispanic or even if the woman wears hair extensions, the product can be used on any hair type."
She told Outlook that the product took about two years to develop - testing and experimenting with different options. "I always wanted to explore hair care and being presented with the opportunity back in 2015, made the idea even that much intriguing."
With motherhood on the horizon, multitasking is not a problem for the 'Pocket Rocket'. " I've always been multitasking - pursuing my degree while competing and training, managing Shelly's CafÈ at the UTech (University of Technology), overseeing community outreach events via the Pocket Rocket Foundation; coupled with all the responsibilities and obligations of being an elite athlete that has commitment to sponsors - but thankfully, a supportive husband and capable staff makes it all doable."
Lady Shelly will be available at selected Hi-Lo stores in Kingston to start, as well as at Chic Hair Salon, which will be relocated and rebranded Lady Shelly Salon later this year.
