The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is inviting Jamaicans to help to present an accurate picture, or rather as many pictures as possible, of the country's solid waste collection and disposal problem.

On Monday, it launched the 'Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica Cleanup Network Photo Competition' inviting community groups, service clubs, academic institutions and non-government organisations to submit 'before' and 'after' photographs of their Labour Day cleanups. The winning entry will get $50,000 cash, with $25,000 going to the second-place entry and third prize, $10,000.

"This year, 'Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica' is all about encouraging communities to host their own cleanups - and Labour Day (Tuesday, May 23) is a perfect opportunity to keep that ball rolling," project coordinator Felicia Wong said in a press statement.

Groups can enter by submitting two high-resolution photographs of a site where they have hosted a cleanup between May 8 and May 28 - one of the photos should be taken before the cleanup, and the other afterwards, showing the improvement(s). Photographs, details of the cleanup and contact information for the entrants should be sent to JET via email to nuhduttyupjamaica@gmail.com [2] no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 28.

Detailed criteria and rules for the photo competition can be found on the Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica website www.nuhduttyupjamaica.org [3]. Photos must also be shared publicly via social-media channels - Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter with the hashtags #NuhDuttyUpJamaica and #NDUJPIX. The three winners will also be included in a Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica Cleanup Network feature in local newspapers and on social media.

Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica is a public education campaign that aims to improve citizen knowledge about the impact of poorly handled waste on public health and the environment, while encouraging personal responsibility for the generation and disposal of waste.
