St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) turned in a commanding performance in their opening ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup contest, slamming eight goals past their opponents Maggotty High at the Appleton Sports Complex yesterday.
Coach Omar 'Rambo' Wedderburn took the first step towards backing up his preseason talk in making up for last season's trophy-less campaign with their Zone E competitors Maggotty High falling on the wrong side of the former champions' statement.
Wedderburn is, however, not putting too much into the performance.
It should be noted that the Santa Cruz-based team started last season in similar fashion with a 10-1 win over Black River High and ended the season without trophy.
"Every year, we start strong, so we are just thinking about the season in front of us and we plan to take it game by game. I think today we showed a lot of discipline both attacking and defending. This was a fair performance for a start," Wedderburn said.
Coach Wedderburn was most pleased with the discipline and organisation that the players displayed on the pitch. He said that winning in such a fashion is good, but he is most happy for the three points.
"It was a good start, and this is what we were looking forward to. The three points are the most important thing about the game," Wedderburn said.
The coach is hoping that whatever confidence is gained from this result will push his boys through the season and help them to titles.
Demar James was the architect of the demolition job with four goals ,while Alex Thompson, Tajay Palmer, Ronaldo Webb and Shavar Murray all chipped in with one goal each.
