The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has announced the assignment of Denzil Thorpe as Permanent Secretary with effect from January 5.
The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, made the announcement recently.
Thorpe is a career public servant, who served for 22 years at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, where he started his career as a Computer Programmer in July 1993. Over the years, he served in several positions at the Ministry, including stints in the post of Director of National Insurance and finally as the Director of Social Security.
In June 2015, he was appointed as permanent secretary and assigned to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.
Thorpe attended the St Catherine Primary School and is a former Head Boy of St George’s College. He credits both Catholic institutions with providing the educational and social background to enhance the upbringing of his parents, who are both former public servants.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Computer Sciences, and a Master of Science degree in Computer-based Management Information Systems, both from the University of the West Indies (UWI), in 1993 and 2001 respectively. He was also a part of Cohort 3 of the Caribbean Leadership Project’s Leadership Development Programme, which he successfully completed in July 2015.
