THE EDITOR, Sir:
The recent annual general meeting of the Jamaica Agricultural Society held at Denbigh on July 11 saw the Electoral Organisation of Jamaica handling the election of officers.
I was there and had challenges to cast my vote. Your newspaper pointed out that an 88-year-old director, Hugh Lyon, did not vote, as he was told that he was not on the voters' list.
The exercise can go down as a litmus test of how our national elections are run in Jamaica. Questioning the officials supervising the event, I could not learn from them whether or not the system was ISO-certified.
In fact, there was electronic voting, where you had to shade in with a special pencil your choice of candidate. We need to have our voting system adhering to ISO standards, which would involve the compilation of an accurate voters' list with a tolerable percentage of error.
Let's not take it for granted.
