Well-known real estate attorney Jennifer Messado has been disbarred.
Messado, who is before the court on multiple fraud-related charges, was struck off the roll of attorneys authorised to practise in Jamaica on Saturday.
The action by the General Legal Council stemmed from a complaint by an attorney who said that Messado breached an agreement as well as failed to pay over sums.
Messado had applied to the Supreme Court in August to be struck off the roll of lawyers, arguing that her arrest on numerous fraud-related charges, pending cases before the legal council and the “adverse publicity” arising from the allegations “took a toll on her mental and physical health.”
With Saturday's decision, the application is not expected to proceed.
Messado, 68, is facing nearly a dozen fraud-related charges in four separate cases in which investigators alleged that she used forged documents to ‘sell’ a number of properties valued at millions of dollars.
Top entertainer David ‘Mavado’ Brooks is among the persons who have come forward with claims of being defrauded by the well-known attorney.
