The Yello Media Group is among the companies leading the charge to get Jamaicans to clean up their act through their latest directory initiative. Recycling is the theme of this year’s directory cover design, and each cover showcases creative and fashionable ways to recycle and reuse everyday garbage.
In tandem with the cover designs, the organisation will be staging a competition in primary and preparatory schools aimed at collecting old directories for recycling.
“Creating a safer, cleaner, more sustainable environment is everyone’s responsibility, so we’re looking forward to playing our part in encouraging these practices and spreading this all-important message,” said Terry Burrell, marketing manager for Yello Media.
“Our message of being more environmentally responsible is important to everyone, but more so to the younger generation who will be our future leaders and influencers,” continued Burrell, noting that Yello Media assumes an intimate responsibility for educating and encouraging citizens to become more environmentally conscious.
The competition, which will be launched in the coming weeks, encourages teachers and students to collect all old directories from homes in their communities and put them in recycling bins provided by the company at each school.
“The school that turns in the most directories will win J$150,000 cash. The top student across all schools will win $50,000, and the top class across all schools will win a grand pizza party,” said Burrell, adding that the schools would be featured on the company’s social media pages.
Yello encouraged Jamaicans to trade in their old copies and pick up a version of this year’s directory, adding that they have collected more than 1,000 directories from their offices and media houses. The company plans to turn over all the old directories to a recycling plant to become reusable paper.
This year’s directories were made from reusable paper and environmentally friendly ink, according to Yello Media. They also feature useful recycling tips.
In addition to secondary students, vendors at the Coronation Market in Kingston were also among the targets for the initiative. Yello Media visited the area recently and distributed reusable bags to shoppers.
