Jamaica College (JC) continues to reaffirm its status as one of the top teams entering this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships by cultivating talent such as the likes of Omarion Davis. Committed and determined are a few words to describe this upcoming athlete. Now in his second year of Class Three, Davis shared why he should be viewed this season as a man on a mission.
David Salmon: Why did you start doing track and field?
Omarion Davis: You know, I do not know. I just run. I ran at Sports Day and my PE teacher told me to come and do tracks and everybody else in grade six told me to do tracks, so I went and that is how I started to do tracks.
Why did you decide to focus on 1500m and 800m?
Because back in Class Four, I used to run 400m and apparently I was not fast enough in 400m. My coach made me run an 800m because of punishment and I came first and third overall at a track meet, so that is how I started running 800m. When I started Class Three last year, my distance coach thought it would have been better if he tried me out in the 1500m. Apparently, I was good so yeah.
What are you most proud of in your athletics career and how do you feel running for your school?
Running for JC, and I feel really good because a lot of first formers back at school look up to me and they respect me, and apparently I inspire them a lot.
What goals do you have for the season?
To come first or second at Champs this year in, both the 800m and 1500m.
What subjects do you enjoy in high school?
Math because I have a connection with it. I don’t know why. It is just really good to and it is fun.
What career goals do you have, and why?
I would like to become a rescue pilot, or a commercial pilot, or a soldier because they interest me. They keep me busy.
Outside of running, do you have any other interests?
Yes, I play football. I like to play a lot of games. Sometimes I will read interesting books likeDiary of a Wimpy Kid and those types of books.
Who is your favourite footballer and why?
Neymar, because he is always dedicated, always want to score goals; always wants to be the best.
What type of music do you listen to and what is your favourite song?
I like listening to love songs because they keep me calm all the time. Any artiste that has good songs, I will listen to it, like Jonas Blue’s ‘Polaroid.’
Which athlete do you consider your greatest inspiration?
I would say Usain Bolt.
What qualities do you possess that best enable you to be successful?
I always work hard. I am always dedicated and I never back down from any challenge.
Who has supported you during this time and what is their impact on you?
My family. They always keep me going and always motivate me.
How do you balance your athletic life and academic studies?
Every time after training, I would usually go and do my homework, try to read up some notes every time when I come from school, before I go to training and after training.
What advice do you have for other students who want to achieve the same level of success?
Always work hard. Never back down from any challenge and always balance your schoolwork because that is the most important thing.
