New York:
Veteran reggae singer Don Angelo – father of Equal Rights deejay, Ishawna, whose spicy private life has made her a tabloid darling – is turning heads with his new single, Sign and Wonders. It’s a collaboration with singjay Jah Jason, known for hits songs M y Princess Gone and Lion Look. The melodic anthem is making the rounds on ethnic radio in the Tri-state and has found a home on Clinton Lindsay’s Foundation radio, enjoying daily rotation since it was released a few weeks ago. The track was produced by Grammy-nominated Michael ‘Jah Mikes’ Coburn from Reggae Vibes Production.
Angelo’s other project, a cultural song titled Selassie First , was recorded with the Meditations. The group had their biggest hit in 1976 with Woman Is Like A Shadow. They are also known for singing background vocals on Bob Marley’s Rastaman Live Up, Blackman Redemption, and Punky Reggae Party.
Both songs by Angelo will be included on a soon-to-be-released Reggae Vibes Production album that which include the single Future Bride, that was co-written with the ‘The Don’ Leroy Smart.
“I was filled with enthusiasm when I heard I would have the chance to work with an iconic group like the Meditations. They have inspired me to do music,” Angello shared with The Gleaner.
“I have been listening to the group from I was growing up. And working with Jah Mason at the same studio, I have always liked his energy, and he has inspired me as an artiste from this era,” he added.
The prolific Angelo has lived in New York since the mid ’90s. He grew up in Kencot, St Andrew, and is a protégé of the late Sugar Minott. He kicked-started his musical career in the ’80’s, voicing for Channel One, King Jammys, and King Tubbys, hitting the charts with Rosie, Golden Touch, Love Feeling, and General, which was a number-one song in France. He had a small acting role in the movie as well. In 2015, he was back on the hit parade with the number one single Rich Life, on Clinton Lindsay’s Foundation Radio Network Top 30 Music Chart in New York.
When asked if he would consider doing a collaboration with his daughter Ishawna, the singer said: “I am an artiste, she is an artiste. A father, daughter combination would be wicked. It is something we have talked about, but we have not set a date when it will happen. When we decide, you will be the first to know,” he said.
