Mushtaq Christopher continued his good run of form, scoring five goals in three games to propel St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) to a 4-0 home victory over Sydney Pagon Stem Academy in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup yesterday.
Christopher, who came on as a substitute, scored a brace with goals in the 57th and 59 minutes.
He was given support from Kristoff Murray (19th) and Shamar Wallace (60th). STETHS now sit atop Group E, with 10 points.
Despite not being entirely pleased with their performance, STETHS’ head coach, Omar ‘Rambo’ Wedderburn, welcomed the three points.
“The three points today was most important although I don’t think we had that glossy a performance. We could have performed much better today, but we are satisfied with the three points,” Wedderburn said.
Wedderburn used the opportunity to give some game time to the players that are not regular starters. He said this game was a good chance to look at more players in the competition.
“That will always stand dividends (to give bench players game time) for us because we are not going to wait until we are in a tough spot to put them out there. We try to get them to play in order to get the experience from now. If we just keep them on the bench and then have to put them in at a crucial time, that can be tough. We are using this opportunity to really look at them in competition,” Wedderburn said.
Wedderburn was impressed by the performance of Christopher and applauded his consistency which he believes will only make the team better.
“We expect him to be doing this because he is a quality player who plays well with the team. He likes to score goals, and I think the team is giving him the opportunity to do that, so it’s a plus to have him out there,” Wedderburn said.
