EDWIN Allen High’s Kevona Davis and DeAndre Watkins of Jamaica College took the Under-20 Girls’ and Boys’ 100 metres titles, respectively, on day two of the Carifta Trials at the Natiional Stadium yesterday.
Davis, who sped to a swift 11.35 seconds win in her semi-final of the Under-20 girls event on Friday, was a bit slower yesterday but showed her class by stepping away from her rivals in the latter stages to win in 11.46. Sashieka Steele of Holmwood Technical surprised Brandy Hall of Edwin Allen for second in 11.55 as Hall clocked 11.59 for third.
In the Under-17 event, it was a clean sweep of the top spots for Edwin Allen as Tina Clayton, 11.45, won ahead of her twin sister, Tia, who was second in 11.62. Serena Cole finished third in 11.70.
There was a shock result in the Boys’ Under-20 event. With pre-race favourite Oblique Seville of Racers failing to report to the start after an injury in his semi-final win the previous day, St Elizabeth Technical’s Sachin Dennis, who ran a fast 10.46 to win his semi-final, was the big favourite ahead of the final. However, it was a fast-finishing Watkins who pulled off the surprise win in 10.61. Raheim Scott of Rusea’s High took second in 10.69, with third going to Shakur Williams of Meadowbrook in 10.73s. Dennis was fourth in 10.83.
Kingston College’s Nkrumie Bouwahgjie scored an impressive win in the Under-17, clocking 10.68. Christopher Scott of Jamaica College 10.82 and Calabar’s Omario Henry (11.00) were second and third, respectively.
Earlier on the track, several athletes produced personal best times in their events. In the Girls’ Under-17 400m, Clarendon College’s Dejanea Oakley sprang a surprise by winning the event in a personal best 53.24 seconds to beat Hydel High’s Alliah Baker (53.69) and Rickiann Russell of Holmwood, 53.83.
Hydel’s Oneika McAnuff produced a late burst to win the Under-20 girls event in a personal best of 52.89. Favourite Aalliyah Francis of Rusea’s was second, also in a new personal best of 52.98. Shaquena Foote of Petersfield was third in 53.18.
Holmwood Technical athletes dominated the 400m among the boys. Taj Hamm and Bovel McPherson produced lifetime-best performances in winning the Under-17 and -20 events. In Under-17, Hamm clocked 47.49 to beat Jamaica College’s Tariq Dacres (48.19) and Ferncout High’s Derrick Grant, 48.97. McPherson won the Under-20 event in 46.39 ahead of Vere Technical’s DeAndre Anderson (46.73) and Jamaica College’s Javair Brown, 46.85
Calabar ruled supreme in the Under-20 Boys’ 1500m as Kevroy Venson toyed with the field before winning in a personal best of 3:52.31. His teammate, Rivaldo Marshall, was second in 3:53.44. Omarion Davis of Jamaica College took the Under-17 event in 4:06.35 ahead of Shaun Brock of Calabar, who was second in 4:07.23.
The three-day meet will come to an end today, starting at noon.
