THE EDITOR, Madam:
It is with an overwhelming feeling of abhorrence and anger that I listened to a discussion in the media last week regarding collections by two utility companies in our country.
I join the group of hard-working Jamaicans who regard the payment of utility bills as being morally right. Many times, these payments are sacrificially made.
How can a company feel justified to charge paying customers more that the amount used because you must ensure your profit margin is sustained? What about my profit? Is it that I have no use for the excess that is attached to my bills each month while others enjoy the luxury of not paying?
Utility companies must collectively find a way to pull non-paying customers into the loop. Use whatever public-service persuasion they can find to sensitise those who do not pay. Find a way to appeal to their moral conscience. Use the law if it becomes necessary.
Do not punish me for doing the right thing.
