They say the perfect couple cooks together, but it takes a power couple to go into business together. Donica Daley and Luke Webster never thought they would be starting a restaurant, but their pure love for food sparked this new and exciting flame.
Together, the two formed Bistro Bites. So far, the tasty menu includes, but is not limited to, bistro subs, curried shrimp, garlic shrimp, picadillo beef pasta and shepherd’s pie. But the top-tier dishes are the lasagna, whether beef or mixed, and the baked mac and cheese, available without meat, with shrimp, chicken, sausage or meat lover’s style. “All our dishes are made with fresh seasoning, rich spices, our secret ingredient, and love,” Daley told Food.
The lovebirds both discovered food individually at a young age and enjoyed watching their parents make magic in the kitchen. Since leaving the nest of their respective rural communities to attend university in the city, they were on their own, which meant they had no choice but to cook for themselves. “We prepared meals for our friends, dorm mates and family, and found joy in seeing them take pleasure in every bite,” she said. Many trials and errors later, the foodies decided to further develop their passion and culinary skills by becoming entrepreneurs.
The journey, which officially began on October 16, 2020, has been a roller-coaster ride of fun, fear and excitement. “We even had a pop-up shop in Mandeville one month after our grand opening,” Dale added. From sourcing suppliers to testing each dish, they have made it their mission to maintain quality and consistency in both food and customer service,” Our customers are accustomed to getting what they want, and that’s exactly our aim.”
With COVID-19 on the rise, the duo, which started the food venture during the global pandemic, understands the implemented protocols and restrictions. Daley revealed, “We do a lot of our promotion over social media. Customers, from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be, place their orders through our Instagram or WhatsApp platform and have it delivered right to their doors. This provides a hassle-free and contactless service, which proves to be safe and secure in this perilous time.”
Even though they are fans of all of the dishes, the business owners are specifically fond of the loaded mac and cheese; and the bistro sub stands out because they are easier on the preparation side and still boast the same great taste every time. Since they are still pursuing studies at university, they have little to no time for hobbies and extracurricular activities. Outside of schoolwork and Bistro Bites, the partners enjoy spending quality time with each other.
