It’s been 10 years since the Gorge Inn Restaurant, along Main Street in Bog Walk, St Catherine, opened its doors. And it still holds its reputation for great-tasting and affordable dishes.
According to proprietor Oral Clarke, despite the downturn in businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, quality service and the loyalty of its customers have kept the doors open. “It is a challenge, but our loyal customers continue to support us during this testing period. It is the good quality of service which we maintain that allows the business to remain,” Clarke said.
Clarke, a former policeman, said that he decided to start the eatery out of wanting to serve affordable dishes in the rural St Catherine township.
“The business started, and since we travel through the gorge, we decided on the name Gorge Inn. The opening proved to be more than a name, therefore, we started by doing lunches, and it (the business) evolved into the restaurant, ice cream parlour, and three bars,” Clarke said.
He shared that his staff has helped to keep the foodies coming back. That, and the food.
The man that keeps the customers’ mouths watering for more is Glenroy Cammock.
“The work starts from 5:30 a.m., with breakfast preparation, then lunch, dinner, and supper. The location of the restaurant is near the Bog Walk market, therefore, we prepare fresh food daily, “Cammock said
The veteran cook told Food that patrons from all over the island dine or have takeout from the Gorge Inn.
“While we cook local dishes such as fried chicken, roasted chicken, curried goat, curried pork, curried beef, and fish to order, we also do special dishes on order to suit the customer’s taste. We also do catering,” Cammock said.
