You might be familiar with Veronica Campbell-Brown, the track phenom, but with her spikes now hung up, we get an opportunity to meet VCB, the mother and entrepreneur.
Life has been “busy, but it’s been fun” for the recently retired Campbell-Brown, who had a stricter routine as she trained and secured eight Olympic medals throughout her career. She’s now embracing motherhood with her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Avianna, who keeps her on her toes, and life off the track with her newest business venture VCB Fit, an activewear line created to help women maintain a healthy and vigorous lifestyle while boosting their confidence to look and feel their best. Whether you are an avid fitness guru, an elite athlete, just getting started on your fitness journey, or running errands, VCB Fit premium-quality designs are, according to vcbfit.com, intended to “inspire confidence, inner strength, and optimum performance”. VCB Fit is in a very competitive industry, but Campbell-Brown is no stranger to competition, and with 10 per cent of each sale going to charity, you help others while shopping the brand.
Campbell-Brown believes in self-care; pouring from an empty cup is simply not an option. “It’s absolutely important for us to take care of ourselves. Life is so demanding, and we are always on the go; and sometimes we don’t realise that we need to pause and take care of us, and for me, I make sure I get my workout in.” While disclosing the logo for her line is inspired by the way her feet look when she finishes a race, Campbell-Brown adds that she makes time to move her body every day, and her workouts, which include weight training, jogging, and tennis, are achieved while rocking — we’ll give you one guess — VCB Fit designs.
Having been to five Olympics, Campbell-Brown says she enjoyed watching the most recent games in Tokyo from home. “I was very pleased with the way our athletes performed.” Did she have FOMO? “Not really, because after I got hurt and injured before the trials, I realised that [that] was it. So I walked away feeling good about everything, knowing that I tried my best.”
On Sha’Carri Richardson? “She’s young, she’s talented, and I really think that she has a bright future ahead of her, and I wish her all the best.”
Letting us know she can sometimes be introverted and shy, she, like many others, is excited about Jamaica’s track and field future and gives this advice to the girls coming up, “stay humble”.
As she reminisces about her career, she says, “It is great to be pursuing new interests”.
Continuing, she adds, “I had a really good career, and so I can look back on all that I’ve accomplished and feel good that I got the job done, and happily move on to the next chapter of my life... feeling good about all the things that I have accomplished.”
