AARON Chatrie made amends for MUM’s recent disqualification and returned to close a two-timer with DIAMOND STAR on yesterday’s nine-race card.
A disqualified winner with Chatrie at five furlongs straight, two Sundays ago, MUM again gave her backers a scare over the course, veering to her left inside the final furlong, but was clear of JAHSENDBLESSINGS, unlike her previous race when she had taken HEART OF THE SEA’s ground close home.
The overwhelming favourite at odds of 1-5, MUM covered the five-straight course in 59.3, winning by five and a half lengths clear of BRIDAL BLUSH, who emerged from a wall of horses to claim second at 27-1 after a terrible start.
Division two of the fillies-only event was won by 18-1 outsider CATABA after 1-5 favourite, ALEXA’S DREAM, got caught behind runners after being slowly into stride.
ALEXA’S DREAM, who was promoted to third after MUM’s disqualification, struggled to make up ground on leader LET’S GET IT ON while CATABA closed fast on the stands’ side to steal the event in 1:01.0 with Christopher Mamdeen.
There was hardly any action in the trainers’ stakes race between two-time defending champion Anthony Nunes, who overhauled Jason DaCosta on Saturday, establishing a $1.2 million lead after FURTHER BAND BEYOND’s victory over BILLY WHIZZ in the $6 million Jamaica Cup.
Nunes had no runner on the programme whereas DaCosta’s HEART OF THE SEA could only manage fourth behind MUM.
Racing continues on Saturday.
