FORMER Hydel High 400 metres runner Charokee Young hit top form last Saturday at the Texas A&M University versus the University of Texas dual meet at College Station.
Young, a Texas A&M student, produced a personal-best and world-leading 50.00 seconds to win the women’s 400 metres. The time was also a meet record. Stacy Ann Williams, a St Elizabeth Technical High School past student and now competing for University of Texas, finished second in 50.56, while her teammate, Kennedy Simon, took third in a personal-best 50.68.
There was also a top three finish on the track for former Edwin Allen High ace sprinter Kevona Davis. Competing for the University of Texas, she took third in the women’s 100 metres in 11.37 seconds. University of Texas swept the top three places as St Lucian Julien Alfred, a former student at St Catherine High School, won the event in a personal-best, college-leading and meet record 11.07, with Kynnedy Flannel second in 11.34. Alfred was also third in the 200 metres in 23.10 seconds.
There was also good results in the field for Jamaicans Ackelia Smith and Lamara Distin.
Competing for the University of Texas, Smith, a former Edwin Allen High jumper, took second in the triple jump with 13.32 metres and third in the long jump with 6.46 metres. Distin, the NCAA Indoor high jump champion, had a second-place finish in the event for Texas A&M University after clearing the bar at 1.93 metres. The University of Texas’ Tyra Gittens won with 1.95m.
Elsewhere over the weekend, World Indoor 60 metres finalist and Olympian Briana Williams opened up her outdoor season with a win in the Olympic Development 200 metres at the Florida Relays in Gainsville, clocking 22.81.
At the Baylor Invitational, there were three second-place finishes for Jamaicans Ackera Nugent, Kimeisha Chambers and Kavia Francis. Competing at home, former Excelsior High athlete Nugent clocked a wind -aided 12.92 seconds (+.2.7) mps in the women’s 100m hurdles. Francis, formerly of Manchester High and Holmwood Technical and competing now for Baylor, clocked 53.08 seconds in the 400 metres, while Francis, a former St Elizabeth Technical intermediate hurdler, stopped the clock at 57.10 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles.
