In the first ever meeting of two Brazilian coaches in top-flight local football, Neider Dos Santos of Montego Bay United and Clovis de Oliveira of Chapelton Maroons played out a tame 0-0 draw in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at Ashenheim Stadium on Sunday.
However, both coaches had contrasting sentiments on their teams’ performances after the game.
“I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it at all. It was unbelievable!” Dos Santos exclaimed afterwards.
“Second half we improved a little bit, but the last pass, we need to get that better. The only way to get better is go back and work harder to improve.”
Nevertheless, he believes one point is better than none.
“The good thing is that we got one point, which is better than none. But we came here for three points, and to get three points you have to win, and to win, we need to perform. There is no other way, and I am not pleased with today’s performance,” he said.
The game started quite scrappily, with the two teams grappling to maintain possession. But the St James club eventually grew into their own and tested Jovell Plunkett with a few long-range efforts.
However, the best chance of the half fell to Allan Ottey nine minutes before the break, but he headed over the bar from five yards.
Chapelton started the second half on a much more positive note, and Mark Lewis could have done better with a good chance early in the half.
Ottey also had another great chance but steered his header wide.
Chapelton also had a few half-chances late in the game, but they failed to trouble the Montego Bay United goalkeeper.
Despite not getting the result he wanted, de Oliveira was proud of the performance of his team.
“We got chances to win in the final quarter with counter-attacks, but unfortunately, we didn’t find the goal. But I am happy. Not with the result, but performance of my players,” he said.
Chapelton stay rooted at the foot of the table on eight points while Montego Bay remain in 10th on 22 points.
