Jamaican-American culinary expert Karl McDermott is making a highly anticipated return to host a special event called Grandeur: Gastronomic Elegance and Runway Glamour on December 2 at Serengeti, Hope Botanical Gardens. McDermott, who is known for his culinary excellence, will showcase his talents in Jamaica, infusing each dish with a rich tapestry of flavours.
Renowned for his work at Hamptons By Design in Long Island, New York, McDermott is more than just a chef; he’s a culinary storyteller. Trained by acclaimed chefs Anne Burrell and Alex Guarnaschelli, who later became famous on Iron Chef America and Chopped, respectively, McDermott has curated dining experiences for notable figures, including Sir Paul McCartney, Denzel Washington, former President Bill Clinton, and Hillary Rodham-Clinton. Now, he’s prepared to delight Jamaica with a five-course culinary symphony.
Grounded in the African philosophy of Ubuntu, McDermott’s culinary creations transcend the ordinary. “I am because we are,” McDermott explains, highlighting the communal nature of his dishes. Deeply connected to Jamaican heritage, he aims to elevate the dining experience by seamlessly blending international influences and drawing inspiration from the rich culinary traditions of Jamaica, Africa, South America, and Europe.
Partnering with McDermott is the acclaimed Jamaican fashion designer, Nigel Ramsay. Known for his remarkable talent, Ramsay’s work showcased at events like Caribbean Fashion Week and Boston Fashion Week, his unique style, featuring free-flowing lines, vibrant colours, and a celebration of the natural female form, has earned him accolades such as Boston Fashion Designer of the Year and Hartford Magazine Designer of the Year. This collaboration promises both a culinary and visual treat, where high fashion and culinary excellence unite.
“Grandeur isn’t merely about indulgence; it’s about giving back,” shared McDermott. Ubuntu Culinary Enchantment, the organisation hosting the event, has designated part of the proceeds from the event for the iconic Little Theatre and the Winsome Wishes for Kids, making Grandeur not just a celebration of opulence but a purposeful night where every indulgent moment contributes to the betterment of the community.
“Get ready to embark on a journey where each bite narrates a story, each garment is a masterpiece, and every moment resonates with the spirit of Grandeur. Save the date for an evening that promises to be more than an event; it’s an immersive experience that will leave you craving for more,” said McDermott.
