THE EDITOR, Madam:
In the hopes of educating and inspiring a student preparing for the upcoming PEP examinations, and who is required to know about the national heroes, especially the Rt Hon Marcus Garvey, Rt Hon Alexander Bustamante and Rt Hon Norman Manley, I decided to visit the National Heroes Park.
To my surprise, there were no soldiers standing guard at the entrance, nor were there any security at all in the park. I felt very unsafe for myself and my young charge, so I hurried the visit.
It is unfortunate that this is not a more visited heritage site by students, locals and tourists. It should be on the list of must-see places in Kingston.
However, it is essential that adequate security presence be maintained. I also believe that the soldiers standing guard (with the changing of the guards) lends an air of honour for our national heroes. Surely we can spare some soldiers for this ceremonial exercise.
However, there should also be a security presence throughout the park. I hope the relevant authorities will see how this can be of value to the nation.
