OFF-SPINNER BRYAN Charles completed a man-of-the-match performance, picking up 13 wickets to help the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to an emphatic innings and 125-run win over the Jamaica Scorpions on day three of their West Indies Championship match at Sabina Park yesterday.
Scores in the match, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force 432 all out, Jamaica Scorpions 189 and 118.
The Scorpions were under pressure coming into the penultimate day as they resumed on 159 for nine, replying to 432 made by the visitors.
Overnight batsman Jeavor Royal added 13 runs to his overnight 33 to help the Scorpions get to 189 before Royal was bowled by Khary Pierre for 46. Andrae Dennis was left not out on 12.
Still trailing by 243 runs, the Scorpions were asked to follow on and they got a better start the second time around with openers Carlos Brown and Javaughn Buchanan adding 50 for the opening partnership.
Charles then got in on the act, removing Brown for 22. When the off-spinner picked up the wicket of Kirk McKenzie for six, at 60 for two, the Scorpions innings spiralled.
Wickets began to tumble with regularity as Charles had the Scorpion batters edging and chipping deliveries to close-in fielders to leave the home side in a tailspin – the last eight wickets falling for a mere 58.
Buchanan offered the only real resistance, producing a fighting 33 from 95 balls.
Charles finished with figures of 7-43 to add to his 6-86 in the first innings. Debutant Navin Bidaisee ended with 2-20.
Scorpions vice-captain, Abijai Mansingh, said his team allowed the Red Force to get away with a big first-innings score and failed to adapt to the visitors’ spinners.
“Conceding 400-plus runs was always going to be tough for us with the inexperienced batting that we have. We have to find a way to build partnerships and address that going forward.”
Winning captain Joshua Da Silva praised his team for a comprehensive victory.
“Coming back from a few games against Barbados where we had a terrible performance, we set out to win the next two and finish the season as positively as possible. We had a nail-biter against CCC but we came here and we were able to win the second one.”
