Thirty-six persons were sworn as new Jamaican citizens, while Gramps Morgan, a member of the reggae group Morgan’s Heritage, led a group of nine Jamaicans in the Tri-State area who received the Consul General’s Heritage Awards on November 15.

The ceremony took place at the consulate’s Manhattan offices.

The 36 new Jamaican citizens were presented with their certificates of citizenship, as well as their Jamaican passports. They range in ages from just over one-year – Glory Ameur-Carter, to 65-year-old Lona Jacas-Gill.

Among the Heritage awardees, drawn from the fields of journalism, healthcare, law enforcement, community service, music and entertainment, are; Gramps Morgan; Lieutenant Danae McFarlane from the New York Police Department and head of the group, Jamaicans in Law Enforcement in the NYPD; and Dr Gary Rhule.

The Heritage Awards is an annual event recognising individuals whose exemplary work embodies the spirit of Jamaica.

This year, the nine distinguished honourees received accolades for their outstanding achievements and unwavering dedication to their respective fields.

Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Alsion Wilson, said that each individual has demonstrated outstanding commitment to their communities, their professions, and the betterment of Jamaica and its diaspora.

“The Consulate General of Jamaica in New York plays a vital role in connecting the Jamaican diaspora and supporting initiatives that uplift and celebrate our community. Recognising these remarkable individuals is not only a gesture of appreciation for their immense contributions, but also a reaffirmation of the importance of community, culture, and service. Their efforts have made a significant difference in promoting Jamaica’s values and spirit, and we thank them for their dedication to advancing our shared heritage,” she said.

“From healthcare and legal services to music and cultural advocacy, the nine awardees are shining examples of how Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica continue to make a positive impact on the world,” she added.

The awards celebrate Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica who have made significant contributions to promoting the island on the global stage and creating positive opportunities for Jamaica and Jamaicans, both locally and abroad.
