THE EDITOR, Madam:
Junction in St Elizabeth is said to be the fastest-growing town in the Caribbean.
Located smack in the middle of the ‘breadbasket’ parish of Jamaica, it is a jewel in vegetable production, the crown of our prestigious tourism industry.
Junction is a stone’s throw from Treasure Beach, which boasts the most expensive houses in our beloved Jamaica.
In Junction, we boast of having four banks, six enormous plazas, countless restaurants, pharmacies, doctors’ surgeries, two gas stations and all the health, civic and entertainment facilities necessary for a modern business hub. However there is not a public convenience in sight.
We at the Junction Development Area Committee (JDAC), set up under the auspices of the SDC, have, with the help of our municipal corporation and kind citizens here and abroad, made a bold start which has, however, come to an abrupt halt.
Our half-finished effort is very difficult to conceal as it is situated in the centre of the town.
I will not dwell on the health hazards that are being harboured. Our taxi drivers and street vendors, some from as far as Trelawny, ply their trade here and leave their bodily waste in our unfinished public convenience.
There’s one street dweller who has taken up residence in one unit. He, however, helps to keep the area free from garbage dumped by passers-by.
We are at a loss as to which fundraising effort to employ. We have exhausted them all.
We call upon the health minister and the minister for local government to garner some funds to complete this long-overdue project before a more serious health issue emerges. We are dreading Grand Market and have been stocking up on all sorts of disinfecting products.
