The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) recently strengthened its commitment to youth development through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Youth Upliftment through Employment (YUTE) social development organisation.

This formalised the existing relationship between the two organisations by confirming the intentions and commitment of YUTE and CMI to achieve meaningful collaboration to support and advance their respective mission and goals. The purpose of the agreement is to transform academic training into a competency-based approach in keeping with the CMI's vision of producing 'industry-ready' graduates. The approach complements CMI's thrust to assist in nation building by influencing change among youths-at-risk and creating meaningful opportunities for them, through personal, professional and academic development.

Under the agreement, YUTE participants will attend classes at CMI in furtherance of their educational development, values and attitudes and eventually, their empowerment. Generally, YUTE provides training for its participants in a variety of areas, namely, housekeeping, marketing and sales, commercial food preparation, customer service and data entry. The CMI component of the programme, however, offers something more. Youths engaged in the programme will undergo paramilitary training which aims at holistic development, through discipline since the employment domain will extend internationally.

Participants in the CMI-YUTE programme will be required to abide by the general rules of the institution, adhere to the programme guidelines and participate in extra-curricular activities.

According to the MOU, YUTE and CMI will share database of unemployed and underemployed persons in seeking to provide international certification and placement in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Youth and Culture, and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica. CMI will also arrange for the apprenticeship placement of selected participants from the industrial security programme, as well as the automative, and welding programmes.

YUTE is a social intervention group led by the private sector and chaired by Joseph Matalon. It provides entrepreneurship opportunities for some 2,000 participants. In its first phase (December 2010 to December 2013), the programme is focused on young people between the ages of 16 and 29, from inner-city communities. It provides training and certification in a variety of areas through the collaboration and support of its partners.
