Bayern's doctor steps down after defeat
MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt is stepping down after almost four decades at the club.
Bayern lost 3-1 at Porto in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday and news agency dpa quotes Mueller-Wohlfahrt as saying in a statement yesterday that the club's "medical department was made primarily responsible for the defeat for inexplicable reasons."
The 72-year-old Mueller-Wohlfahrt, who is also the German national team doctor, says the trust necessary for a successful working relationship has been damaged.
Bayern were without several injured stars against Porto, including Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and David Alaba.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola and Mueller-Wohlfahrt have reportedly had differences of opinion on several previous occasions.
Bayern spokesman Markus Hoerwick said he was unaware of the statement and could not comment on it.
