CMI lowers cost of port equipment training

As part of the thrust to increase the cadre of skilled labour in logistics, the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) has reduced the cost of its slate of port equipment training options.

The training and certification is designed to meet the needs of port operators and companies in the industrial belt and will increase the employability of those who complete the training.

The training options, which are scheduled as per request, range from eight to 62 hours, and successful participants will be awarded a professional certificate of training from the CMI, which is an ISO 9001:2008 certified training institution. There are no academic prerequisites, but persons should be at least 21 years old or have related industry experience.

The training will shore up the ability of Jamaican workers to compete for logistics-centred jobs locally, regionally, and globally as the skills are exportable and transferable. Seven options are currently on offer through the CMI's School of Advanced Skills.

These are:

- Forklift Only - 8 hours; $12,500

- Straddle Carrier Only - 16 hours; $25,000

- Bulk Crane Only - 12 hours; $20,000

- Gantry Crane Only - 26 hours; $36,000

- Gantry Crane and Forklift - 34 hours; $40,250

- Gantry Crane, Bulk Crane and Forklift - 46 hours; $60,000

- Gantry Crane, Forklift, Straddle Carrier and Bulk Crane - 62 hours; $90,000.

According to director of the School of Advanced Skills (CMI) Osric Forrest, "Jamaicans must now seize the opportunity to get themselves trained and certified to ensure that the skill sets needed by investors and global companies are available here in Jamaica."
