Jus' Skool every year - Commitment made to continuing back-to-school fair

Thousands of parents and children came out to the St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston on Saturday for the Digicel/STAR Jus' Skool back-to-school fair.

Now in its second year, the treat has experienced so much growth that telecommunications giant Digicel is looking to make the event a calendar one. Kamal Powell, senior sponsorship and development manager at Digicel, told The Gleaner that the company is looking forward to continuing the event for many years to come.

"This is our second year and we're all about giving back to Jamaica. Last year, almost 10,000 children participated in the event, and this year we had thousands more participating," he said. "Digicel has been in the country for more than 15 years. The community and the country have given to Digicel and it's a part of our corporate and social responsibility to give back."

EXPANDING ITS REACH

Powell also said that the success of Jus' Skool in downtown Kingston has prompted the idea of taking the treat to rural Jamaica. "Each year we're going to get bigger and better. We were in Montego Bay this year and it was a splendid event. In the near future, we're definitely going to expand the overall give-back programme, and it's going to be great. We will also continue supporting smaller events across the island, because we are all about giving back," Powell said.

On Saturday, children were treated to much-needed school supplies. They were also given the opportunity to receive haircuts and eye and ear testing.

Jus' Skool also had an exciting entertainment programme, which saw performances from Tanto Blacks, Pink Boss, Tifa, Busy Signal, and Devin di Dakta, as well as the 2016 Digicel Rising Stars finalists.
