Amina Blackwood-Meeks bringing Moonshine & Storytelling Magic to Island Village
Island Village is celebrating Jamaican culture with Moonshine & Storytelling Magic, featuring orator Amina Blackwood-Meeks.
Blackwood-Meeks is an award-winning writer, actress, storyteller, founder and artistic director of Ntukuma, The Storytelling Foundation of Jamaica.
Moonshine & Storytelling Magic is part of Island Village’s 6 for 60, marking Jamaica’s 60th year of independence.
The 6 for 60 series will see an event held every third Sunday for six months, from June to November 2022. It will begin on Sunday, Father’s Day, and end on National Storytelling Day, November 20.
The Father’s Day start is no accident and aims to promote healthy connections between Jamaican fathers and their children.
National Storytelling Day was proclaimed by the governor general in 2014 and is the climax of Ananse SoundSplash, the annual storytelling conference and festival produced by Ntukuma, The Storytelling Foundation of Jamaica.
Each 6 for 60 story time will be held in Ocho Rios, on the Island Village stage, featuring Blackwood-Meeks with local talent from St Ann. These interactive presentations of Anancy stories and games are designed for a family audience and will be free and commence at 4 p.m. each Sunday. The programme will include traditional games, Jamaican stories and folk songs.
