Kingston Wharves clarifies details of hub deal

Chairman and chief executive officer of Kingston Wharves Limited (kwL), Grantley Stephenson, has clarified details pertaining to last Friday's launch of a new Caribbean shipping hub at the port of Kingston facility for Hsegh Autoliners, as reported in the February 26 issue of sister publication, the Financial Gleaner .
"There was no governmental intervention in arriving at the agreement for the establishment of the vehicle-trans-shipment hub," the chairman said, correcting the association of the Government's planned Friday announcement of the project with state connection to the deal.
The KWL head also pointed to the incorrect linking of the deal with International Shipping Limited of Trinidad.
"KWL is not aware of any partnership with any Trinidad-based freight forwarder," Stephenson said.
The Kingston-based Jamaican firm, International Shipping Limited, is the entity participating in the venture as the Jamaican agent of Hsegh Autoliners.
Unrelated to expansion projects
Stephenson said the establishment of the hub was not related to the recent expansion projects at KWL, a connection not made in the earlier report, which nevertheless spoke to the fact of the recent infrastructure work there.
At the same time, KWL, responding to the question raised in Friday's report, of whether the activity would extend to the Port Authority of Jamaica-operated Kingston Container Terminal, stated, "the new business will not be split with anyone."
