The mother of an 11-month-old girl who died in a fire in Salem, near Runaway Bay in St Ann, on Saturday night remained in police custody Sunday afternoon.

The St Ann police confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the woman, whose name is being withheld, is to be questioned further regarding the incident.

Reports are that the woman left her four young children in her house on Saturday night and went about her business.

It is alleged that a lit candle was left in the house, as there was no electricity connected to the premises.

Neighbours reported that shortly before 9 o'clock, they saw fire coming from the house and alerted the police.

Charred remains

Upon arrival, the police were able to save three of the children but the youngest, the 11-month-old who was asleep, perished before help could reach her.

The charred remains were recovered after the fire department put out the blaze.

The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
