More gun violence in downtown Kingston

The downtown Kingston market district was left tense yesterday after an early morning strike by gunmen left one man nursing gunshot wounds on the busy Orange Street.
Reports are that about 8 a.m., the victim, whose name is being withheld, was heading home after purchasing a loaf of bread when he was approached by two men armed with guns. The men opened fire before escaping on foot.
Members of a police team who were patrolling the market district were quick on the scene, but the criminals managed to escape. One man was later detained by the police for questioning.
Minutes after the shooting, some business operators and vendors expressed their disgust with the all-too-frequent violent incidents in the market district. They pointed to the recent fatal shooting of a man in Parade and the subsequent killing of the alleged shooter by the police at a time when hundreds of persons were in downtown Kingston heading home.
One business operator, who asked not to be named, urged the police to take control of the area as violent incidents could cause shoppers to take their money elsewhere.
