Mervyn Eyre has seen many advances in the technology business having been with Fujitsu Caribbean (previously International Computers Limited); 20 years later, he is still fired up for the job.

Fujitsu supplies customers with everything, from servers to devices, and are not shy to boast that theirs are the fastest computers in the world, catering to large enterprises and governments.

In the region, Fujitsu is located in Trinidad, The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Mexico and Central America. Fujitsu are innovators who supply technological products, infrastructure products, software services, cloud services and business consultancy services to clients.

In an interview with The Gleaner, Eyre said Fujitsu is equipped and ready to take its clients forward to navigate the advances in digital transformation that has been taking place in the technological and financial arenas. Digital transformation is also happening in many other industries in the age when technology is influencing and impacting more of the world.

"With digital technology industries such as taxi service Uber, and even international air, bed and breakfast vacation travel companies having options previously unavailable to take their businesses globally digital transformation will be disrupting the way we have all done business up to this point so far, making it that much more exciting," said Eyre.

The financial industry is another major area that will be affected by digital disruption with increased use of technologies such as Blockchain, which will allow more payments to be executed without going through a clearing house. This, along with other exciting technological innovations, is poised to be the next generation of the Internet.

Four waves

Eyre outlined the four waves of technological advancement that have led to and will continue into the future.

1. Globally, the Internet is now the default platform for information exchange and the processing of transactions.

2. Mobile communication has increased with access possible anywhere, anytime. Smartphones are now like mini computers with high capability to generate more data, thus increasing learning capability for everyone.

3. We are living in the age of the 'Internet of things', such as cars, bulbs, kiosks, security systems and wireless routers that all help people to access far more goods and services and improve the quality of life.

4. Artificial intelligence is now bringing new levels of business insight, automation and knowledge to all industries , fundamentally changing business models and how things are done.

"In a digital world, you either disrupt or you will be disrupted," Eyre told The Gleaner adding, "Through our constant pursuit of innovation, we aim to contribute to the creation of a networked society that is rewarding and secure, bringing about a prosperous future for people across the region."

He said also that industries must ultimately ensure that technology is applied to human-centric activities that transform customers' lives though new experiences.

The Fujitsi Caribbean head said his company would continue to improve and impact the lives of people through innovation as they drive digital transformation across all industries. They will also focus on providing a portfolio of technologies and services to ease this process of transformation for their customers.
