For 65-year-old Gleaner columnist Peter Espeut, the 25 years of service which yielded more than 1,200 weekly columns has been an honour and a privilege and, should he be blessed with longer life, who's to tell if he won't "write a second 25 years worth of columns", he reckoned.

The Roman Catholic deacon and known environmentalist has penned pieces on a wide range of issues, among them, corruption, various religious issues and the education system which he has described as an "apartheid system".

"It is quite a discipline, every week, no matter where in the world you are to sit down and write a column for The Gleaner," said Espeut while recounting that his very first was published on February 17, 1993.

Espeut will be recognised at a church service to be held at the St Annes Catholic Church in West Kingston on Sunday, starting at 10:30 a.m.

"I hope the public, those who know me and those who appreciate my writing, will come out to pray for me, and also for the issues that I've raised for the last 25 years," said Espeut.
