Transparent process - JCA boss says all applicants will have equal chance in head coach hunt

President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Wilford 'Billy' Heaven says that strict guidelines will be followed in the selection of the new head coach of the country's senior men's team.

Heaven told The Sunday Gleaner that the post will be advertised in March, and persons who are interested would be asked to send in their applications to the association.

"The way I do recruitment is that everybody starts out with an equal chance," said Heaven.

"The person will single out himself during the interview process based on the qualification and based on experience," he added.

"We are looking at a set of criteria that have been established to choose the coach, and so there will be transparency, and there will be a methodology," Heaven said.

The position of head coach became vacant after the JCA decided not to renew the contract of Robert Samuels, which ended last month.

The JCA boss argued that there was no clear front runner for the post at this time because interim coach Robert Haynes would also have to apply for the job.

"He has an equal chance like anybody else. We will be advertising the position, and he, like everybody else, can apply," he said. Heaven reiterated the position of the JCA that the coach would be chosen from a local pool.

"We will not be advertising overseas. We will be advertising locally for a local coach. We have 12 Level Three coaches, but everybody may not be available to us, but I think we have the numbers to find a good coach in Jamaica," he said.

Heaven added that he hoped that the process would be completed by April.

Haynes recently signed a four-month contract as interim head coach. His contract period started on January 1 and will end on April 30, 2019.

He will have responsibility for the Jamaica Scorpions' remaining nine games in the CWI Professional Cricket League - Windies Four-day Championship.
