Hydel draw hurts Camperdown
CAMPERDOWN’S HOPES of securing a second-round berth in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup received a severe blow after they played to a 0-0 draw with Hydel in their Group E match at the Royal Lakes field yesterday.
The result left Camperdown on eight points, six behind Hydel and 16 off leaders Mona. Wolmer’s sits second with 15 points.
Needing to win to keep their chances alive, Camperdown were second best for the majority of the contest and were fortunate not to concede.
“We are very disappointed with the result. I think the performance could have been much better, with what was at stake,” said assistant coach Damion ‘Stew Peas’ Stewart.
“To have a chance we needed to win but I didn’t think we came out with that mindset. The team didn’t look as if we needed to win.”
With two games remaining, it will take a miracle to see Camperdown through to the next phase but Stewart said they will keep going until the end.
“I don’t want to point fingers but this has been a bad season for Camperdown. It looks like we will have to reshuffle and come again because it appears we can’t go through.
“We have two games and six points to play for. We can only get 15 points and they (Hydel) are already on 14. So mathematically our chance is not gone as yet. So we will go for it and hope for the best,” he told The Gleaner.
POOR FINISHING
Hydel created better and had more chances in the first half and only failed to take the lead because of poor finishing.
Their best chance of the half fell to Ruben Brown but he blasted over from three yards with the goal at his mercy.
Camperdown had their chances too, missing a simple header from a corner late in the half.
Hydel continued to have the better of play at the start of the half but were still wasteful in front of goal.
However, Camperdown finished the half as the stronger team and had a great chance through Junior Grizzle, who hesitated and eventually lost the opportunity.
The draw puts Hydel on 14 points and in a strong position to advance to the second round.
Coach Devon Anderson said it was a similar game to the team’s first meeting when they failed to make use of their chances and had to settle for the point.
“Goals win matches and we didn’t put away our chances and today we got numerous amounts,” he said.
“We have a depleted squad at the moment and a lot of young players are coming in, which we are blooding for next year. But we will take each game as it comes and wherever the result puts us, we will take it.
“It’s a new project but you can see it working because we continue to create a huge number of chances, despite having over 10 players out,” said Anderson.
