WESTERN BUREAU:

In the heart of the Jamaican hospitality landscape, Couples Sans Souci has recently completed a remarkable $12-million renovation, breathing new life into its grand suites and iconic facilities.

However, the visionaries behind the resort have assured guests that the transformation is merely a prelude to a more extraordinary experience unfolding over the next five years.

Translated from French, sans souci means “without worry” – a sentiment that encapsulates the essence of the guest experience at this 35-acre haven. Luxury, serenity, and peace are the watchwords, resonating from the meticulously designed suites to the inviting spa and the warm embrace of nature that pervades every corner.

Launched in February, the renovation project encompassed 78 grand suites, including the prestigious Hibiscus Villa, the main lobby, and the renowned Cassanova Restaurant. The addition of a café, a signature feature of Couples resorts, further enhances the culinary journey for guests seeking a perfect blend of flavours.

The pools, a centrepiece of leisure, have undergone a transformative facelift, as explained by Pierre Battaglia, the dedicated general manager. In a recent interview with The Gleaner, he highlighted the significant strides taken in the last five years to elevate every aspect of the resort, even in the face of challenges posed by the global pandemic.

As the world reopened its doors post-pandemic, Couples Sans Souci swiftly put its latest renovations into action. The commitment to continuous improvement is unwavering, with construction plans unveiled for further enriching the already opulent property and promising an even more exceptional experience for returning visitors in the next five years.

Battaglia takes pride in Sans Souci’s unique status as the smallest, yet most expansive property in the Couples hotel chain. With only 150 suites, it stands as a testament to exclusivity amid the 35-acre lush landscape. Battaglia, in a boastful tone, highlights the wealth of natural wonders, including protected environmental sites, ponds, waterfalls, and even a secluded nude beach – an all-natural escape as the French would say, “tout naturel”.

Unique getaways

Guests are invited to explore spacious hideaways in plain sight or venture into the resort’s expansive grounds to create a getaway that is both unique and customised. Currently occupying only 12 acres of the total land, plans are under way for a 10-acre expansion, as revealed by Battaglia during a special dinner with local travel agents on December 22.

“The travel agents are very interested in knowing the actual quality of the product. They want to do the business right away, they want to know what we are going to offer for next year,” he explained, noting that Couples is known for its expertise in hosting weddings, and for Sans Souci that is a prime market.

This expansion is a pivotal move to enhance the resort’s offerings and cater to the increasing demand from travel agents eager to showcase quality products to their clients. Couples Sans Souci has earned a reputation, especially in hosting weddings, with plans to accommodate group packages. However, Battaglia emphasised the importance of maintaining exclusivity, restricting group sizes to no more than 100 people, and carefully selecting the ideal times for group visits.

A walk through history reveals that Sans Souci is an iconic resort with roots dating back to the ‘50s and ‘60s. A beacon of luxury, it has left an indelible mark by being featured in two James Bond films: Live and Let Die and Dr No. The tribute continues with the Roger Moore Penthouse suite, honouring the James Bond actor, and hosting other renowned figures like Angela Bassett and Luciano Pavarotti.

Judith James-Watts, managing director of Leisure for Pleasure Holidays and Tours Limited, commends the resort’s allure, particularly for group and wedding packages. She noted the added value of complimentary tours to attractions, such as Dunns River Falls, a feature that resonates well with her clients.

Steven Kerr, vice-president of product strategy at Trafalgar Travels, expressed excitement about the rebranded Sans Souci. He emphasised the resort’s unique offering of quiet relaxation and rejuvenation, providing an ideal escape just outside Kingston. Kerr predicted that the resort, with its recent refurbishments, will now be on the top of the list for clients seeking a distinct and elevated experience.

In a rapidly evolving hospitality landscape, Couples Sans Souci emerges not just as a renovated retreat, but as a symbol of continued commitment to excellence and a promise of unparalleled luxury in the years to come.
