Portia urges PNP supporters to focus on upcoming local gov't elections

President of the People's National Party (PNP) and Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller has called on supporters to organise and focus their attention on the upcoming local government elections, due this year.

Speaking at the North West Manchester Constituency annual conference yesterday evening, Simpson Miller said she will not be taking the elections lightly. She said the PNP needed to win and retain all parish council seats.

The PNP president said there was no room for complacency, as the party must unite and win back the trust of Jamaicans.

During her presentation, the Opposition leader criticised the Andrew Holness Administration over its promised tax-break to citizens. Simpson Miller quoted the International Monetary Fund as saying that the government will need to find J$16 billion more to fund the increase of the income tax threshold to J$1 million.

The new threshold took effect on July 1. Simpson said the increase in the threshold will result in the imposition of other taxes that will consequently make life harder for Jamaicans.
