Courtney Smith delivers clean to your doorstep

Whenever you hear the sound of the horn and shouts of "Bleach and soap!" along St Johns Road and its environs in Spanish Town, St Catherine, residents know that Courtney Smith is passing through.

The 42-year-old can often be found riding his retrofitted four-wheel cycle, which is outfitted with a seatbelt on a large seat, offering bleach and soap for sale.

"I have been selling soap, bleach, and clothespins for more than 10 years, and it has helped me to take care of my family. I am out here today to make the lunch money for school tomorrow," Smith said to The Gleaner recently.

He said that he made modifications to the cycle because he spends a lot of time on it and he wanted to be comfortable.

"I saw my father selling things to support us as children. I decided to do something like him but with a special cycle," Smith said.

He shared that selling household products has been a good avenue for him to support his family although it can be very challenging, especially during periods of poor weather.

"I have even put a covering over the seat area, but water and sun still affect me. But the challenge only makes me more determined to survive," Smith said.

Residents who purchase from Smith often say that they enjoy the convenience.

"You can hear him blowing the horn in his mouth. When that don't work, him shout and him just appear on the cycle. It is good, hard work," said Marcia Kong.
