The Danny Williams School for the Deaf has become the third institution graced by the charitable service of Miss Universe Jamaica 2018 Davina Bennett. Bright and early on Saturday morning, Bennett, along with a volunteer group, visited the Papine, St Andrew, school. They were armed with paintbrushes, aprons, and cleaning supplies to undertake a makeover.

"We're doing a beautification project. We're basically repainting the school. We're doing clean-up, rearranging classrooms [and] the vice-principal's office. It's a full clean-up day," the beauty queen told The Gleaner.

Since winning the hearts of persons who watched the pageant worldwide, Bennett has made it a mission of hers to make the Davina Bennett Foundation for the Deaf as impactful as possible. "We have over 40 volunteers here today, including people coming from Spanish Town, so they are only coming to give an hour of their time. We have everybody chipping in to do what they can," Bennett continued.

Last year, Bennett endeavoured to beautify the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf. Similar to last weekend's activities, the volunteers repainted a classroom, as well as the entrance of the school, and conducted a widespread clean-up. The pageant winner also partnered with Sagicor Sigma Run, of which one of the beneficiaries was the St Christopher's School of the Deaf in Brown's Town, St Ann.

Through the Davina Bennett Foundation, a photocopy machine will also be donated to the Danny Williams School. "My main aim and objective is to get all the schools for the deaf in Jamaica ... the things that they need to feel like they're in a better environment for learning," Bennett said.

To solicit more donations for the Davina Bennett Foundation for the Deaf, the beauty will be selling 'Jamaican lifestyle' calendars for the years 2018 and 2019. "I don't think anyone's done a two-year calendar, right?" she laughed. At a package cost of US$50 or JMD$5,000 for both, the calendars will be launched and available for purchase and signing on Wednesday, April 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
