In response to the growing need in the business community for courses to equip supervisors and managers, the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) will mount a supervisory-management workshop on June 19 and 20, 2018.

The presenter, Novlette Denton-Prince, is a certified workforce trainer. She is a graduate of Delaware State University and the University of the West Indies and has been in the field of education and training for more than 30 years.

Prince will lead the participants through a range of competencies necessary for a 21st-century leader. Participants will explore expected topics such as managing effectively, dealing with diversity in the workforce, managing stress, and managing the effects of organisational changes on groups and teams. Added to these is the topic of performance management.

Prince is quoted as saying, "Performance management is important in any management activity. It is critical to manage the impact of the individual and of teams on the organisational bottom line in areas such as longevity and profitability."

The workshop will take place over one full day and one half day, and will take the form of case study-analysis and guided learning, infused with the usual vibrant learner participation which the workshops have become known for. At its completion, all the learners will be given certificates of participation.

The workshops that have been offered so far have received very high praise from the participants, and the association is keen on maintaining this very high standard of delivery and administration. The SAJ hosted its first workshop of 2018 on 'Public Relations and Crisis Management'. The associations will offer other workshops on topics such as 'Social Media Management and Content Planning' and 'Occupational Health and Safety' later this year.

In 2019, 'Corporate Writing Skills' and 'Staff Engagement' are among topics that will be explored.
